What makes a great film?
Watching Barfi made me realize... lets not even go there.
It's like buying a fake TAG Heuer watch which still looks good.
Thus i made sure what u read below is MY TAKE on the film irrespective of how much of what is
copied, lifted, stolen...everything negative i could feel towards people who scam movie lovers, there's still some positive in it.
Here goes...
If you are a movie watcher oblivious to everything else in the movie world outside our own space, Barfi is far better than a lot of other nonsense dished out to the hindi speaking audience.
My take on the film.
Barfi is the story about two personality traits missing in probably all of us.
Ranbir (Barfi) the def & dumb & PC (Jhilmil) an autistic child. Their account of un-conditional love which comes purely from the innocence of their very existence.
The film begins with Shruti (Ileana D’Cruz), recalls how her life changed in 1972 when her family moved from Kolkata to Darjeeling where she meets Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor). Unemployed Barfi spends his days making mischief around town, to the anxiety of police inspector Dutta (Saurabh Shukla). Though he has a crush on Shruti, Barfi settles for friendship with her, because she is engaged. The two spend their days racing bicycles and bumming rides on train cars, falling in love in the process.
Shruti's mother makes her realize how love doesn't last on love alone. Thus, thanks to her intelligence she moves on and decides the marry the quintessential man with everything, probably even love...which Shruti can't see because she's still blinded by Barfi's innocence. So then why marry another man? Anyway, who cares, it seems more like she has a lot of sympathy for Barfi, like we would have for a handicapped person.
Gradually through the film it's clear Jhilmil (PC) & Barfi are in love with each other.
Going back to my statement, 'Barfi is the story about two personality traits missing in probably all of us.' I say this because both barfi & jhilmil love each other ignoring the others flaws and develop a deep bond of trust, love & desire for the other.
The man Barfi being def and mute...he simply watches the world & gives.
The woman Jhilmil needs to simply trust her life with someone with her eccentricities. She gets that from barfi.
Two strong aspects missing in most relationships. Trust & Self less Act.
Two strong aspects which can only come if we can become def to our so called intelligent brain & just act from our heart for the other and not necessarily speak of doing but act.
This is MY TAKE from Barfi.
If a film can leave me with a positive take, it's done something. Should i get into if it's great cinema? I wouldn't even want to get there.
